Paul,
This is easier than you think, and not an option in IE...
In My Computer, Tools, Folder Options use File Types tab and find
appropriate extension (normal one I use to look at is .doc). Click the
Advanced button and of the 3 tick boxes you see 2 are useful:
Confirm open after download
Browse in same window

The latter prevents ie from opening office documents within the browser
itself in the "cut down word" way it does which is really
annoying.

I normally change these for pdf and office docs.

Title says it all really, - can anyone tell me where the *** the option
is in IE7 to go and add/change mime-types so I can modify which programs
are launched by certain links?... damned if I can find it!!
