Looking for a couple of 26" LCDs myself. Do the Samsung or Sony
provide
discrete on/off and input selection via IR? I like the pq and styling of
both but really do need the discrete IR codes for ease of use with
universal
remotes.

To a certain extent, yes, but there is more to a LCD TV than the panel.

eg Some argue that the signal processing in the Sony TVs is better.
