It only made sense with CRT screens where upconversion on the player
was
there because the TV didnt have one. most 1080i capable tvs sold in pal
countries are 100Hz however, which means that the benifits are reduced over
what they get in ntsc countries where the tvs dont up convert.

With a flat panel, it has to be native res to display it, and if you take a
dvd up to 1080i and send it to a flat panel, it has to deinterlace that to
display, so you end up with 2 deinterlaces done on it, which is not pretty.
And if the panel isnt a 720 line panel, then outputting 720p means that
there is 2 resizings happening, also not good.

Any time you see people commenting that the blacks looked better on the
upconversion or something to do with colours, its a different processing
thats happening somewhere along the way, usually the upscalers tweek the
image to look a bit better to most people, but you can achieve that with

brightness and contrast on the TV usually.

The upconverting players I have used have done a really bad job on video
sourced dvds, which are what a bulk of mine are (music, not pron!!) - And

100hz tv isnt a hell of a lot better at not screwing things up either.

Upscaling - now that's interesting... A couple of questions if you
don't mind a 'hijack'.=20

I've just got a Pioneer 507xd and I'm very pleased with it - it's
actually better on SD than I'd hoped for. Nevertheless, I'm intending
to get Sky HD and was thinking about getting an upscaling DVD player
but then I realised I'm not quite sure I get the 'upscaling' bit.=20
Surely these TV sets effectively upscale SD HDMI (and other) feeds
themselves to fit the screen's specific size anyway and I'm guessing
that the top end manufacturers put quite a bit of effort to get this
right. So why is having an external upscaler (DVD or AVR) going to be
better at this job - especially if the TV feed is kept digital via HDMI?=20

Is it trying to achieve the video equivalent (sort of) of using an
external (and higher quality) DAC on a CD player?=20

If this is so, I'd expect to have to pay a lot more for an external
upscaler but these seem to be appearing on every DVD player and now
(some) AVRs. For example, why would a 'cheapish' DVD player do a
better job of upscaling to a expensive TV than the TV itself? Even
with a pretty expensive DVD (even more so for an AVR) I still can't
see why this would be so as the upscaling 'feature' is surely no more
than an add-on to the core purpose, so it's not like it is going to
be anymore highly engineered than the equivalent effort put in by the
TV manufacturer. (At least external DACs were specifically built to do
just that.)=20

Maybe I'm missing something but I cant find anything on the web as to
where the upscaling is best done. There may be an obvious answer but
I don't see it!

(I did wonder if it was just that the newer DVD players also have HDMI
output and it all a simple case of not doing a DAC and then back on a
component/RGB feed and gaining an improvement this way. I could
understand why cheap - say =A3100 - DVD players can suddenly appear much
better than older ones; they don't have to do the important DAC job
anymore. Maybe I'm too much of a cynic.)
