See if you can find a copy of solidworks installed somewhere to have a
play with, its quite easy, and the office version can make nice looking
renders once you learn how to drive it.

I was with you until you got to CAD! I downloaded the trial of Autocad
2007 for a play a few weeks ago.
After about 30 minutes I developed and overwhelming inferiority complex
and a deep feeling of dumbness thus quickly uninstalled it :-)
