You need remove any possible noise sources from within your premises.

Always use the master socket.

If you have any hard wired extensions then you want to filter these as even
unused telephone wiring can pick up
interferance in your home, especially as their is a electric current flying
through them causing a ring loop to act
as an antenna.

If you have hardwired extensions then get a NTE5 faceplate filter (
www.clarity.it have them), however you need to have
a NTE5 linebox in order to do this (the site tells you about it).

Move closer to the exchange? Seriously though, I've heard that fitting one
of those pre-filtered faceplates can help.
