If you're lucky the BIOS will support timed wakeup (or could perhaps be
sent a WOL packet from another machine on the LAN). The box can shut
itself down when the backup's finished (a script run out of cron to
check for rsync processes should be sufficient). No timeswitch needed.
I do something similar with my mythtv backend machine to save power.
