Interesting topic of conversation but I am surprised no-one has
mentioned LEDs. Some of the new "bulbs" are now running between 3
and
5W but providing a similiar output to a 40W halogen bulb. In addition
the Cree LEDs are also dimmable.

LED technology for general lighting is a relatively new technology and
probably a lot of improvements to come and the cost to reduce.
