Interested in this topic and surprised no-one has mentioned LED
technology. The latest superbright LEDs at 3 - 5W power consumption can
produce the equivalent of a 40 - 50W halogen bulb. In addition some of
the new LEDs from Cree are also dimmable.

LEDs are still a relatively new technolgy for general lighting and we
will hopefully see some further improvements in the coming years and a
significant reduction in price.
