It's the supplied DVB-T PCI tuner cards, so not relying on IR links.

All the replies so far have indicated that channel stuff is generally slow
on digital irrespective of the system, so I'm prepared to accept that side
of things.

But it's not just the channel stuff that's slow, sometimes everything is
unresponsive but no disk activity (i.e. it's not the windows
"gulp" while it
sorts the swap file out!).

What tuner are you using ?

Sky, DVB-T or something else ?

Your IR speed could be slow.

If you're using Sky, try controlling your box using a Sky Eye.
You'll find it'll be far more reliable than a stick on IR emitter and you
should be able to adjust the IR speed to fast (In your TV setup. Go in to
Settings -> TV ->Set up TV Signal. You'll eventually get to the IR
speed
setting)

If you have MCE and your tuner hooked up to your TV, try changing channels
in MCE whilst watching the tuner input. You should find that the channel
changing should be quick. But if you watch it through the MCE input, you'll
find it appears slower. This is because the the input is buffered - an
inherent feature of PVR's.

There is a hack available to switch of the PVR function. I haven't tried it
myself yet but it's worth a go :
