I don't think what you've been told is right.  IIRC, there's a few
people on this list running MCE extenders on UK Xboxes.

Hi all,

I've been informed that unless you have a US Xbox (Not Xbox 360) you
cannot use it as an MCE 2005 extender.

Is there a workaround for this?
