It is not the speed you want to measure - just look at error stats,
things
like CRCs and alignment errors will be the problem if cabling is an issue.

That said for 100mb applications there is sooooooo much head room in a
Cat5e
solution that for the sort of length links you are talking about you can
get
away with all sorts of abuse. Now gigabit may be a different matter!

The difference between the 237 strips and a patch panel that LOOKS like it
is the same IDC mechanism etc is that the panel has been designed to
compensate for the insertion loss it represents. A 237 strip will not have
this compensation.

In my experience, and personal opinion, where 100mb is concerned, as long
as
you do not split the pairs and make a fairly decent attempt at maintaining
the twists you can get away with a lot of no-nos. For a professional
install
I would not promote such a gung-ho outlook. As said for 100mb it's ok, gig
may be less forgiving!

For extension of cables I personally would use those single run
'consolidation' points someone posted about a little while back or follow
Keith's suggestions....
