Yes keep them in different dirs.

XBMC also has the ability to have multiple profiles or logins each with
a different set of network shares etc and each controlled with a
separate pin.

So you could have one login for the kids, with appropriate shares
pre-configured, and all rights to config options removed, and one login
for yourself including network browsing and full config rights.
