I'm afraid it was always the noggins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noggin)
that beat me when cabling my house.  However I got quite adept at finding
them, putting a hole either side of them, chasing out a channel in the
plasterboard and noggin, running the cable and then plastering over
again...
If I thought the cable might have to come out again I'd stick in a bit of
conduit but most times I just plastered over and repainted - usually only a
couple of square inches.

think its the insulation that could prove challenging!

that and the possible presence of horizontal battons!
