Before auto-sensing ports, uplink ports were wired differently to
allow 'hub to hub' connections via regular patch cables.  For 'hub to
hub' read also 'switch to switch'.  Without this, a cross over cable
would be needed to connect hub to hub.  Some devices gave you a switch
to change the uplink port to a 'regular' port.  These days, it is
generally automatic.
