Maybe not as cheap as your solution ....I was going to suggest using an x10
ds10 device and connect the bell press to this.......

Hi,

I was thinking about interfacing a doorbell to my PC so that i can
play any sound. The price of a simple PCB type TX unit is about £8.

You can by the freidland bell push, about £8 and these with come case,
button, and fully assembled etc, and it has lots of code combinations!

So could be used for lots of diffent tasks where a simple closed
contact is required.

Anyone know how to interface it or tried something like it, the
website already has the timings, they seem a bit like X10?
