Homeplug power line adapters

Ok so I am not quite sure why but I have hit a snag.

I bought 3 85Mbps adapters and have wired 1 to the adsl router down
stairs and one to the switch up stairs.

the router handles DNS and DHCP requests for the network.

With the long ether net cable in I can see both of the power adapters
and when I unplug the long cable... zip squat nada.

any ideas?

I bough the 3rd to connect to a remote xbox
