Well... after the various musing, I'll be going the NAS route now.

because, of course, the media server dropped dead within a week of
moving to XP. turns out the ole Highpoint Rocket Raid 404 card
*really* doesn't like XP!!

it's the usual highpoint schtick - fails doing DMA transfers under
heavy load: and makes it an absolute hound to recover the data.

I'm basically waiting till next pay day, then I reckon I'll go the 2Gb
terastation route.

quite ironic - The geriatric P3 NT4 box has been super stable and fast
for a good couple of years now, and moving to XP hosed it in a week. :
