As others have stated:

You need to check the maximum rated voltage of the resistor
Be aware that although we are talking about 240VAC this is actually the rms
value so the peak is nearer 340V

You also need to check the power rating, as Steve pointed out 0.5W seems
very low.
I'd go for a 2W or more resistor, it may also be worth putting it in heat
resistant sleeving.
