You can, of course, just buy the CD, encode in iTunes (as mp3 if you
really want) and play on whatever h/w you like. Also, iTunes purchases
can be played on up to 5 (I think) different machines. If you upgrade,
you just disable playback on the old one and enable it on the new one.
Had your friend backed up any of their other precious data?
