Sounds like a directional spot light to me, the type with the lamp
behind a
slot which can be rotated. One example is

Subject: [ukha_d] In ceiling directional spotlights
I'm on the lookout for some in ceiling narrow beam (pencil type)
spotlights that are adjustable in beam direction but remain totally
flush with the ceiling if possible. Important is that they are minimally
bright/visible from outside of their intended beam direction. I do
prefer the light characteristics of mains powered but would go with LED
if the warmth was right. These need to be smallish - they will be used
to light either pictures or small tables around the periphery of a room.
Also on the lookout for maybe some wall mounted uplighter type
lights (for ceiling illumination) that provide properly graduated
lighting across the ceiling width - ie throw more light the further
distance required to get even illumination...
I'm generally trying to achieve getting light into a fairly dark
(oak wood panelled) room without having ceiling spots that dazzle when
you're lying on the sofa, similar with a bedroom type scenario - if
anyone has any tips... or do we have any talented lighting consultants
here I wonder ?
Kevin
PS Did consider the ceiling platform approach with light at the edges
(like Marcus' recent pics) but it's not really practical
