Tim,
The power supply is a Switched Mode unit from what looks like a Radio
Rack made by Ericsson. It is rated at 15 Amps and the voltage can be set
by a small potentiometer on the front panel using a screwdriver...
This was an E-bay Purchase, great place for high quality kit that no one
else needs...
The voltage is set to 13.80 Volts, this is the voltage for a 6 cell lead
acid battery, each cell is 2.2 volts. What most people think of as a
12volt car battery is in fact 13.8 volts....
The voltage is said to float across the battery as when the battery is
charged no current should be drawn from the Power Supply. You need to be
careful no to overheat the battery by having the voltage too high. This
is why basic car battery chargers should not be left connected for
extended periods of time once a battery is charged. If you want a
battery to be held while in storage there are special battery
conditioners / chargers which cycle the battery keeping it in good
condition.
The battery provides spare capacity to deal with sudden surges as well
as giving a few minutes of 'Battery Backup' should the mains supply
fail...
HTH

Yes Nigel, that is sort of what I had in mind - I imagine mine having a
lot more insulation tape, cable ties and chocolate block involved -
yours is a lovely job! Sorry for my ignorance, but what does "floated
across a battery" mean - and what does it achieve?
Out of interest, what is the spec of the 13V transformer you bought?
Cheers for the inspiration,
Tim.
