You can use a nas box with it - so you don't have to have a pc switched on
all the time. although the same goes for the slim devices kit too.



I think 4x squeezeboxes could be had for around 1k, whereas with a sonos,
you'd end up with two, maybe three rooms.

Welcome.

Presumably we are talking about music stored in digital format on the
PC (MP3 etc) being distributed to your amps in different rooms.

Couple of ideas to get you going...  As you have amps and speakers
already, you don't really need to distribute sound out at speaker
level from the soundcard.  Instead, you could go for digital
distribution(MP3 or lossless) direct to a device like a Squeezebox 3
in each room and line-level from that to your amps

The squeezebox is reputed to be possibly around the best quality end
of the streaming devices and I see there is now an industry in
upgrading them to provide 'near audiophile' quality devices (at a
price) - Google to discover more.

Available wireless or wired, so you may not even need to cable up!

Also, more sophisticated, you might look ar the new sonos zp80 unit

Same idea but very trick control device.

Both the above should syncronise without any problem.

Only issue I can see is that neither actually 'need' HAL2000 ;-)
[Though it's possible that you can link into the Squeezebox server
with HAL, not absolutely sure though - others may know.]

Neither of the above has wired in on-wall controls or need IR
distribution.  They have their own contollers; its perhaps the
differnce in the controllers that really distinguish these alternatives.
