The download speeds can be quite poor unless you open up the correct ports
to allow seeders/peers to initiate incoming connections to you rather than
just outgoing connections. Fir example I was getting a max download of
1-2kb/s mostly less until I got the ports open correctly. I now get upto
30kb/s so it makes a significant difference to the download rate that I
achieve.

I've got the same router but use BitComet. What do you mean 'speed
things along'?
