I was pretty sure that I had seen a "virgin" terastation,
but of course, now
that I am looking for it... :D

Sounds like it was nothing more than forum speculation about the
Terastation
Pro.

The OP might be thinking of Infrant - which is available "empty".
It runs
NAS too, and has a slimserver available - but there doesn't seem to be much
hardcore hacking going on. It doesn't look too hard though...
