RE: Home cinema

You really need to see a well installed set-up, it is really
surprising jus=
t
what can be achieved even with modest outlays. TV shops are no use for this
kind of demo, they do not spend any time setting up the screens and often
use RF distribution to put a picture on all of the screens at the same time
giving very poor results. You need to find a hifi/AV retailer with proper
demo facilities to see what the fuss is all about. A 42=94 or 50=94 plasma
=
using
upscaling DVD player and 5.1 surround sound is a revelation if you have
bee=
n
watching on a small laptop screen. Stepping up to a decent projector and
7.=
1
system can give you a =93better than the cinema=94 system albeit at a
price=
. The
downside is that you will have to fight over who gets to use it if you both
watch different DVD=92s at the same time!

=20

To give you some idea of costs you can now get a decent 50=94 plasma for
around =A32k, good upscaling DVD player for =A3150, surround sound AV
recei=
ver
for =A3500 and 5.1 speaker system for =A3500. With cables on top you would
=
have
an outlay approaching =A33.5k for a self-installed system. You could easily
spend 3x this or more on =93better=94 kit as well if the bug bites!!

Hmm ... good points ... how to answer ?

... as Tim noted a long time ago, the core image of DVDs is surprisingly=20
small ... meaning it's difficult to see that large images can be good,=20
other than as a means of allowing more people to view ... ie: the larger=20
image has to be seen far-away, 'cos the detail ain't there ...

... sound ... the stereo hi-fi's pretty-good, base-wise & all ...

... image-quality ... the 'Macs are pretty good ... colour accuracy
&=20
depth, etc ... last-time I went to the shops, TVs - of any size or type=20
- were pretty poor, in-comparison ... ... in a few weeks, I'll=20
look-again ... don't get let-out very often ... once a year !

... our room ... not large ... about 3m square ... plus adjoining=20
ways-through ... meaning 3m x 5m, acoustically ... french-windows on one=20
wall ... walls & ceiling wet-plastered ...

otherwise .. it's the parlour, which'll have a large 2.4m square table,=20
bar-stool height, with low-set four-screen display-box in 'centre, one=20
to each side, each able to display 'different or 'same programme ...

'middle-floor encompasses all this, opening to garden, too ... in=20
summer, anyway ...
