RE: I need a doorbell!!!

The theory of mine is:
=20
Cat5 connected to a simple push-button (2-core bell wire would have done,
but Cat5 keeps the options open for the future). This activates an X10
power-flash module, which communicates with Homeseer. Homeseer then
switches over the Sonos circuits to the PC audio, and plays a ding-dong (or
whatever) sound over the house speakers. Sonos is then switched back to
whatever it was doing before. That bit almost works (the Sonos switching
i=
s
still not quite there, but that's because of my rubbish scripting!) The
next bit is work in progress....If the alarm is armed, then they'll hear
th=
e
sound of barking dogs, probably on a distant set of Sonos speakers so that
it sounds more like there's pack of rabid dogs in the back of the house.
I=
f
they press it again, they'll hear a slightly different sound. The
IP-connection camera (not yet connected) will take a piccy and email it off
somewhere. I could do more, but SWMBO drew the line at some sort of
Heath-Robinson contraption behind the front door that simulated wild dogs
jumping up at the door :-)

All in all, taking into account the cost of Sonos, the PC, the various X10
bits it probably runs to about =A33k for a doorbell ;-) SWMBO wasn't happy
when the doorbell wasn't real-time (some people are never happy!), but now
the lag between pressing the button and hearing a sound is <1second, so
not
too bad, especially in the world of X10.

Subject: [ukha_d] I need a doorbell!!!

right all....playtime! :)

Just bought my first house and as soon as the lounge floor is clear of
all my stuff the carpet will be up and cabling shall be laid!

First challenge...-.I don't have a doorbell....-No problem I hear you
say just pop down to B and Q and buy one.....not really in the HA
mindset tho!

So...I'm appealing to you all for all/any ideas, some far out ones be
good, some doable ones would be helpful but really i'm looking for
what can i do that will help justify my HA need!

I've seen mentions of door phones with Asterisk, don't really need a
doorphone, (it's only a little house) but if I could justify building
an asterisk box because I need a doorbell and it could then ring the
phones with a distinctive ring then cool!

or anythign else?! Absolutely anything considered, ...well anything
apart from just buying a normal one!!

Thanks

Noel
