I'm no expert, but this sounds like an ideal job for a backup tool (I
realise you aren't actually doing a backup).
They have various facilities for copying just those files that don't exist
on the destination, or just those altered, etc. Take advice from some of
our other colleagues first, but it sounds like an "incremental
backup" might
do just what you want.
