I completely agree, we've been using "desktops" as
"servers" at work
for years, and they're brilliant. The ones I've bought for home I got

For example : Dell Dimension 2400 CEL 2.6ghz 512mb/80gb/CD-RW 110 +
VAT (delivery is about =A38 IIRC)
They used to do old PIII machines, where were <=A350 - perfect for the
job, but they seem to have dissappeared from the site
No affiliation etc, etc, just a satisfied customer!!
