Thx for all replies, I might be able to separate them about 20cm apart,
and I appreciate the low voltage lighting remark - I was planning to
put a waterproof box containing the transformers in the garden, but it
may be easier to keep those on the dry side of the house and run 12v dc
instead. Had already planned to put in some extra cat5 :-)
