GPRS has a theoretical maximum of 171kbps for a eight slots. To the
best of my knowledge, no terminal equipment is currently capable of
using more than 4 slots. Under poor reception conditions the capacity
of a slot will drop to 9k6. The number of slots allocated is
controlled by the operator and subject to prevailing cell use etc. To
cut a long story short, an average connection speed in real life urban
area would be around the 40kb/s mark.
Orange CSD supports HSCSD and achieves a throughput of 28k8 through
channel bonding - but you pay for multiples of a single 9k6 data call
for the privilege.
Orange GPRS has a long running history of poor reliability as reported
by end-users on the orange mailing list, but no common denominator has
ever been found. For some users it works brilliantly, for others
rarely, if at all.
