In answer to your questions:
1) Yes, you can simply add shared folders on remote machines to the
different media sections e.g. pictures, music. Not sure how fast it would
be, but you can do it.
2) You're talking about a Media Centre Extender, talked about a while back.
My understanding is that a PC cannot be an Extender, but the upcoming XBOX
360 is an Extender.

I'm looking at getting an MCE box in the near future, however a couple of
questions
1) Is it possible to have MCE use disks on another machine ?
2) Is there any way to have a remote machine with tuner cards in it,
keeping
the requirements for the STB type component small.
