Phew - just caught up on this thread! Nothing having a 'heated debate'
as Mrs Mertle used to say :-)
Anyways... did anyone catch the bit at the bottom of the BBC page...

Looks like there could also a direct attack (albeit the BBC mention
Linux) on people who write open source software... no more open source
mp3/ movie players etc.
Seems like the best bet is to make sure you still have a good ol' XP box
running on hardware that doesn't have all this hardware identification
on it just so you can convert your already owned media...
