No, no, no.....

Setup one of the hot corners to switch to desktop. This will give you
exactly what you want. I just move my mouse down to the right hand
corner of the screen and boom (:-)) my desktop appears!

PS If you get a multibutton mouse i.e. more than two buttons you can
also program the expose functions onto the mouse - I have scroll
wheel configured that when I push it, Expose kicks in (mimics f12).
This is all configurable through Sys Preferences - Expose and Desktop
