I think the point here is that you are allowing the battery to
completely discharge - I am assuming here that it is a Lithium-Ion
battery, and that being the case even with the usage of this machine
you should leave the battery in the machine so it is maintained with
as much charge as possible.
With the PDA you mention I cannot expain this other than to say I have
seen devices where they initiate a charging cycle when connected to
their docking cradle, and then only re-initiate the cycle when the
battery reports as LOW (about 10% remaining charge). Modern laptops
and (I hope) PDAs should be designed with the knowlege that Li-Ion
batteries should not be deep discharged and trickle charge almost
constantly (I think it is about a 15 minute cycle from end of charge
to start of charge in laptops)
