Paul,
In the DNS Server snap-in, create a new DNS entry named
"telephone" and
give it your servers IP.
In the IIS manager, create a new web site. In the properties for the
new site, on the "Web Site" tab, click advanced. Select the
"Default"
ip address, click edit, and add "telephone.domain.com" into the
host
header.
Click "Add" and set the IP address to default, the port to 80,
and the
host header to "Telephone"
Then, on the "Home Directory" tab, change it to "Content for
this
resource should come from a redirection to a URL" and enter
http://192.168.0.2:52340 as the
URL.
Apply the changes, and restart the web site.
Make sure that domain.com is listed as the DNS Suffix on every computer
in the domain.
Voila! Typing "telephone" in the IE address bar will cause your
PC to
make a DNS query with the DNS suffix appended. This query will return
the IP of your server, which will be contacted on port 80 with a host
header of either "telephone" or "telephone.domain.com"
IIS, upon receiving the request, sees the host header, and, realizing it
matches this new "web site" attempts to load the home page from
the home
directory. But, then the redirect happens, and you end up at your phone
software's page.

Subject: [ukha_d] Web server DNS name
I asked this a few weeks ago but didn't get it resolved. This is what I
want to do and need some ideas/help:
I have a xAP application running on my W2K3 server. It has a web
interface service running on port 52340. I also have IIS v6 running on
the server (domain controller that also runs most other services inc
DNS) and serve up local web pages for HA use and Exchange.
What I want to do is type 'telephone' into IE's address bar and have it
load the correct page. At the moment I have to type 192.168.0.2:52340 or
servername.domain:52340.
I think I need to add a DNS entry and use host headers on IIS maybe??? I
don't understand the host headers bit though.
Help would be great thanks!
Paul.
