Hmmm, I think that error normally means an unrecognised MPEG stream type -
although this isn't really my "thing" so I hope the more
video-editing savvy
don't crucify me for it.

Can you play the mpeg in windows media player, or only through the VLC
player you mentioned?

Normally, it's a pretty good rule of thumb that if the codecs are all
installed to allow media player (or, in fact, bsplayer, which is even more
tolerant) to play the file correctly, then virtualdub should be able to
join
the dots as it were.

There's a handy little utility called gspot (download it from www.doom9.org
) which will tell you exactly what codecs are used in your file - if you
then download and install those codecs as directshow filters (again, doom9
has a bunch of codecs to download) you should be able to do the do. :)

That's what I was after!

Unfortunately, when I open up the mpeg file, I get a "No video frames
found
in MPEG file" error.
Any ideas?
