Now that's really strange, cause I got my replacement cord on Monday and it
DIDN'T have the RCD type thingy in the middle.  It was just a cord with a
larger "figure-8" type connector.

Maybe different versions of X BOX need different protection??

Yeah, me too. Dodgy components / design of Xbox PSU ?

The instructions that came with the lead didn't really give any clue as to
what the 'smarts' in the new cable does. It looks like an RCD but also
detects undervoltage / brownout conditions apparently.
