James, we have done several installs in Devon - where problems with
power seem to be rampant - this is our "cost-effective"
recommendation. There are other (much more) expensive ways to protect
against storms/lightninng/power cuts/power spikes. But we found this
to be a good compromise:

- For each router - install one Belkin Regulator Pro 650VA.
(Belkin code F6C650) This has protection for both phone and mains.
dabs.com sells these units for gbp53.

- For each PC (AND DISPLAY) - install one Kebo UPS-1000D
( ebuyer.com sells them for gbp40 for mains power)
(and these units also have phone protection if you need that)
and one APC PROTECTNET 100BT (part.no. PNET1) for each
network connection. These sell for gbp14.

- For each (laser) printer - we also use a kebo UPS-1000D
and (if needed) a APC PNET1.

There are no guarantees that anything will survive a direct strike but
we have found that the above (when properly earthed) either prevent
damage altogether or (in the worst case) damages just the
UPSs/protectors - a loss pof just 40 or 50 pounds.

hope this helps
