Yes there is and every now and then when I have time I go through my trash
and read/browse the [OT] posts.

And then I would miss most of the on topic threads because I would need to
browse thousands of messages which I don't have time for. For me email
lists
are read as they come in my mailbox.

That's where quoting comes in.
