I like the folowing:

Ability to read topics using email (I think this is possible with forums
too).
** Ability to reply to a topic using email ** (not possible with forums ?)
Instant notifaction of new topics via email  (I think this is possible with
forums too).

I dislike the following:

Searching is crap via email.
Mailing lists can seem difficult to new members.
No PM system  with email.
