As much as I hate to admit it (I'm an Internet "traditionalist"
too,
and until recently, preferred email lists over forums), I think
movement towards the forum solves these problems.
Off-topic stuff then becomes inherently seperated from on-topic, and
the latter becomes even better categorised, allowing easier digestion
and understanding, even searching. It's also less intimidating to
newbies; getting "in" to an email list can feel much more like
you're
intruding someone else's conversations.
Provided tools like RSS are available, then I think forums are just as
manageable to read; content is still "pushed" to the reader,
allowing
them to choose what to read and when - just like email.
