You would be welcome to take part in the VSCP project
(http://www.vscp.org).  We are at the
moment working with an open
wireless and power line protocol for the project. Already having a
system that do CAN and TCP/IP. We have many great talents from all
over the world in the project and we need more brains. Its great fun
and with only one goal to make tiny little things talk to each
other....

There are others available also of course. XAP and XPL among others. I
think you can google for them beacuse I don't have a URL at hand.
