Surely this is a limitation of iTunes and Apple's* unwillingness to
license their DRM to other people

It's why I'm never likely to buy much music online - with a CD I can
listen to it, lend it to a friend, rip it to multiple devices or if I
don't like it flog it or give it away, the online music stores seem to
want to take half of these rights away!

* it's not just Apple, the rest of the music stores suffer the same
problem too.
