Inserting PCMCIA cards

Before I ruin my laptop, I've just received a PCMCIA tv card and the
instructions imply that you insert the card and the new hardware found box
will appear, but I didn't think you could put cards in when the machine was
on, can I do this or should I do it when it's powered off. Equally would
the
same apply for taking it out?
