check the incoming tails on your mains unit - have a sniff and listen
around
the boards meter.

Sounds like a failing connection, which will smell or crackle.

I have a problem with the electrics in the house, started a few days
ago...

Mainly affects the lights which dim when something else is switched
on...

ie. if you put on a hairdryer the lights dim for a second.

Sometimes happens on it's own, and no, it's not dodgy X10 or
something, it's only a very short dim.

We've had a few odd noises coming from a couple of the (now unplugged)
applicances.

I've checked that all the fuses at the fuse box are the correct
strength, so nothing *should be* overloaded and we have a circuit
breaker in place.

I think an electrician is in order but I'd like to know what sort of
thing could be causing the problem so that when he arrives and does
that sharp intake of breath and says "thats gonna cost ya!" I'll
know
if he is having me on or not :/

Cheers

Steve
