In my experience cats learn very quickly....
if it's to their advantage to do so

I didn't tell our cats how the door where their food is kept opens,  or
where under the floor the CH pipes run  ;-)

I taught one of our cats to sit on command (an awfullot of bribery was
involved) but our other cat didn't need teaching,  she just copied

I was planning on setting a reader antenna into circumference of their food
bowls and dispensing food on demand - correctly measured for the specific
animal

I have been thinking about this, but the speed at which the cat
arrives and bursts through the cat flap sometimes would lead to
serious injury unless the reader could validate and open the
flap in about 20mS assuming a 12cm detection distance.
