An Automated Carpet

Taken from the back page of Computer Weekly...

An intelligent carpet that can control heating and lighting in the home,
and can even act as a burglar alarm has been developed by German
scientists. Carpet maker Vorwek teamed up with chip maker Infeon to make
what they claim is the world's first "thinking carpet". It
detects footsteps to switch on relevant lighting, checks the temperature
and adjusts it accordingly, and can call the police if movement is detected
when the house should be empty. Sensors in the carpet that record
information are linked to a central computer. For those who need a carpet
to run their lives it will be in the shops this year.
