Usually, yes. Or you use them to wirelessly bridge two disparate wired
LANs.

If the wired LANs are on the same network, there is no need for WDS, as the
all the wireless clients can get connections onto the wired network via
their nearest AP, and thus the APs dont need to communicate with each other
wirelessly (if that makes sense!) Alot more can be done using modified
firmware, as these include more advanced routing, which supports things
like multiple paths etc.
