Thanks Ian - the more I read, the more complex this sounds - some great
tanks on ultimatereef.net though :)

Paul.

Hi Paul

Having had tropical marine fish before I can tell you the biggest labour
of love is topping up the water as it evaporates. If you can do this you
are 50% of the way to a peaceful life. unless you are adding very small
quantities of water it needs to be near the correct temperature as well.
So, a water reservoir and an accurate level sensor and you are half way
there.

Once you have that nailed then water changes were the next most neglected
task. Automated but triggered by you would be the ideal. You will usually
need to watch and contribute to this process. Look at getting the water
you are replacing out of the tank in a controlled manner, mixing up and
heating the new water and then adding it back in.

Finally feeding if you are away. I always enjoyed feeding my fish as in
time they will come and take it from your hands.

Lights were always just on a timer according to the levels the fish
expected and time when I was there.

If yours will be marine and not tropical marine then the temperature bit
is not so relevant but still should not be a mile out.

Just a few thoughts.

Ian

I'm just thinking about getting a reasonably large marine tank and fish.
I'm a complete novice and will be seeking help and advice from other
quarters but wanted to get some advice from the HA enabled fish tank
owners here (I think there are a few?). What do you automate and why/how
etc?

The DVD fish tank was just not good enough ;)

Thanks,

Paul.
