RE: Simple voip

Short answer - yes!

I'm doing pretty much what you describe, using a Grandstream. I use the
Sipgate VoIP service which gives me a local landline number. I've also got
a
couple of softphones on PCs, using other Sipgate accounts.

You could just as easily replace the adapter & normal phone setup with
an IP
phone.

Early days yet, but seems reliable. Receiving calls appears to work fine,
although you get an American style ring tone instead of the usual UK style
for both the caller and the phone. Sound quality seems OK, I guess it could
be prone to problems if you've got a big file transfer going as well for
example.

I can't comment on the Sipgate support, I've not needed to use it. My
expectation is to get what I pay for, and their service is cheap (only pay
for outgoing calls to ordinary phones worldwide) - my expectations can only
be met or exceeded that way ;-)

No connections etc

Next step is to see if it'll work with the Meteor and pass CLID info to
Homeseer ....

Regards,
Roger

Subject: [ukha_d] Simple voip

Has anyone used a voip "service without a pc involved, i.e. a real
handset.
I can get adaptor to allow use of normal phones that goes into
broadband router ethernet socket.
Then subscribe to a service tha gives me a new number and make free
calls to other voip phones and cheap calls to ordinary phones in UK, US
and Ireland.
Is it reliable yet? What about receiving calls?

Thanks,

Martin
